What’s in Your Dental First Aid Kit?

Posted .

You probably have a first aid kit in your home. Or at the very least, you know where to find the aspirin and Band-Aids® when you need them. But are you prepared for a dental emergency? They do happen from time to time. Whether it is a toothache or a lost tooth, at some point, you or someone in your home will need some sort of dental first aid. So, start preparing now.

Your dental first aid kit should include a dental mirror, rubber gloves. You can also include things such as a spare toothbrush, tweezers, toothpicks, or dental floss. All of these objects can help you inspect damage to your teeth, and remove foreign objects or food that have become lodged in your teeth. For pain, you should consider aspirin or ibuprofen. A cold pack may come in handy, as well as a topical pain reliever or clove oil. To disinfect and clean an injury, use hydrogen peroxide. If you have a problem with your braces, dental wax can keep your dental work from irritating or injuring your lips or mouth. Dental cement can be used to hold a loose crown or filling in place, and cotton pellets or temporary fillings can help if you develop a cavity or lose a filling altogether.

Keep in mind that a dental first aid kit is for just that: providing first aid. Your first call when a dental emergency strikes should be to your dentist to schedule an appointment to have the problem fixed. If you would like to find out if there are other things you can include in your first aid kit, or if you are having a problem with your teeth and mouth, it is time to talk to our dentist, Dr. Arthur Kremer.
