Dental Emergencies: How to Avoid Oral Issues While Traveling

Posted .

Vacations are for fun and adventures—not for dental emergencies. However, if you’re not careful, dental emergencies can occur and put a damper on your whole trip. This is why Dr. Arthur Kremer and our dental team encourage you to do all you can to avoid dental issues and emergencies. To help you, we would like to tell you the things you can do to reduce your chances of having problems.

First, try not to begin a major dental treatment right before you leave. This is because oftentimes the treatment requires multiple visits. If you leave between appointments, you’ll be stuck thinking more about your smile than about your adventures. So, it’s best to complete the treatment and recovery period before you leave or wait to begin treatment until you get back.

Second, take care of any dental issues before you hit the road. This is especially true if you have a worn down filling or if you have a loose crown. If you get them fixed, you don’t have to worry about your filling or crown falling out of place while you’re on vacation. However, if you can’t fix these issues before you leave, there are ways you can improve the situation until you get back into town. Use over-the-counter dental cement to fill the hole in your tooth or to place the crown back in place.

Third, take good care of your smile. If you stay dedicated to your oral hygiene routine, your teeth and gums can remain in tip-top shape and you won’t need to worry about cavities, periodontal disease, or other dental issues. Just make sure to pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash before you leave so you can brush twice a day and floss and rinse once a day.

If you care for your smile by doing these things, you’ll be on the right track toward a problem-free trip or vacation!
