Compromised tooth enamel and poor oral hygiene practices invite the natural bacteria in your mouth to create a cavity. If you have a bad habit of procrastinating your regular dental checkup at our office, the cavity will continue to grow. Without professional care, too much of the tooth can be compromised that it cannot viably be repaired by a filling.
So long as the interior structures of the tooth are healthy, Dr. Arthur Kremer might recommend treating the cavity and restoring the tooth with a dental crown. This is a nearly perfect copy of the entire tooth enamel layer that is cast in an artificial material like porcelain, gold, or another metallic alloy.
The process starts with Dr. Arthur Kremer examining the tooth and taking some X-rays to ensure the bacteria has not infiltrated the pulp and root of the tooth. If he finds a problem, treatment might call for a root canal.
Dr. Arthur Kremer will then use a drill to remove the majority of the tooth enamel, leaving behind a healthy core of dentin. This abutment will eventually anchor your new crown in place.
A detailed impression will be made of the abutment and surrounding teeth. Then the abutment will then be covered by a temporary crown. The impression will be sent to a dental lab technician who will make your new crown.
Dr. Arthur Kremer will call you back in for a second appointment when the crown is ready. Once it has been cemented onto the abutment with special dental adhesive, the newly restored tooth will last you for many years ahead.
